How to undertake a water leak test for your business
Water leaks can pose a significant financial threat to businesses, silently draining resources while often going unnoticed. Whether it’s a slow, hidden leak or a sudden burst pipe, the cumulative impact on utility bills, property damage, and operational disruptions can result in substantial financial losses for businesses. Addressing and preventing water leaks is not only essential for environmental conservation but also crucial for safeguarding the financial health and sustainability of any business. This brief guide explains how you undertake a water leak test for your business to identify if you have a leak.
If you do have a leak, then you may be able to apply for a leakage allowance from your business water supplier. If you are unsure on how to do this then email us at contact@clearsightenergy.com
Step 1
Open the meter chamber and remove the polystyrene covering the meter along with any surface water that may have accumulated.
Step 2
To confirm you are examining the accurate water meter, shut off the external stop tap and activate an indoor tap. If no water flows, then it is your meter.
Step 3
Record the meter reading and turn the external stop tap back on.
Step 4
Do not use any water for the next 30 minutes, then check the meter reading again. If there’s a change, it indicates a water leak.
Step 5
To identify the source of the leak without using any water, shut off the water supply at your internal stop tap. Allow 30 minutes to elapse, then record another meter reading. If the reading changes, the water is escaping externally; if there is no change, the leakage is internal.
Step 6
If the water meter readings remain consistent throughout the entire test, there is no water escaping, indicating no leak; it’s likely that your water usage has increased.
