What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is the international standard for energy management systems (EnMS). Organisations certified to ISO 50001 implement a structured approach to identifying, monitoring, and improving energy performance, modelled on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle familiar from ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The standard requires an energy policy, energy review, performance indicators, objectives and targets, action plans, monitoring and measurement, and continual improvement. ISO 50001 certification is recognised by ESOS (the UK Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) as an alternative to a traditional ESOS audit.

- Check. Monitor performance, internal audit, evaluation against targets.
- Act. Management review, corrective actions, continual improvement.

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) requires large UK organisations to undertake four-yearly energy audits. Two routes to ESOS compliance:
- Traditional ESOS audit. A lead assessor surveys energy use and identifies opportunities every four years.
- ISO 50001 certification. Organisations certified to ISO 50001 (covering all UK energy use) are automatically ESOS compliant without a separate audit.
For organisations committed to long-term energy management, ISO 50001 is often more cost-effective than recurring ESOS audits. It also provides the continuous improvement framework that ESOS audits lack.
Getting certified
Typical certification timeline:
- Gap analysis. Assess current state against ISO 50001 requirements (1-2 months).
- EnMS development. Develop or update policies, procedures, baseline, KPIs (3-6 months).
- Implementation. Roll out EnMS across operations, train staff (3-6 months).
- Internal audit. Audit the EnMS internally before external certification (1-2 months).
- Stage 1 certification audit. External auditor reviews documentation and readiness.
- Stage 2 certification audit. External auditor verifies implementation; recommends certification.
- Certification awarded. Valid for three years with annual surveillance audits.
Certification is awarded by accredited Certification Bodies; UKAS-accredited certification is required for ESOS recognition.
