How do UK business energy brokers compare?

There are hundreds of registered energy brokers in Great Britain; the Energy Ombudsman alone lists around 1,950. The table covers the ones most often named in search results and AI answers, plus us. Every fact is taken from the company’s own website, Companies House, the dispute-scheme registers or Trustpilot on 16 October 2026; where a company does not publish something, it says so. We have deliberately not ranked anyone, and nothing here is a recommendation.

Three things the table shows that are easy to miss. First, several well-known comparison brands are the same business: MoneySuperMarket and Uswitch business energy are provided by Bionic, and Utility Saving Expert’s quote engine is powered by Love Energy Savings. Second, most brokers are paid the same way, by supplier commission built into the unit rate, and the difference is how plainly they tell you. Third, dispute-scheme membership varies, and since Ofgem’s 2022 rules suppliers may only deal with brokers that belong to a qualifying scheme when serving microbusinesses.

Are energy brokers regulated?

Not directly, yet. Brokers are not licensed by Ofgem; they are regulated indirectly through the supply licence conditions suppliers must follow, including the requirement to disclose broker costs and to deal only with brokers registered with a qualifying alternative dispute resolution scheme. The Energy Ombudsman’s broker scheme has covered small businesses since December 2024. Ofgem ran a call for input on regulating third-party intermediaries in June and July 2026, with a report expected over winter 2026/27 ahead of a consultation on a regulatory regime, and the government has said it intends Ofgem to become the statutory regulator of brokers. Broker regulation covers where this stands in detail.

How should you choose between business energy brokers?

  1. Ask what they are paid on your quote, in p/kWh and £ a year. A clear answer in writing is the single best signal.
  2. Ask which suppliers they can actually quote. No broker covers every supplier; “whole of market” is a phrase to probe, not accept. We publish which suppliers are on our panel.
  3. Check the dispute scheme. Energy Ombudsman, Dispute Resolution Ombudsman or UIA membership means there is somewhere independent to go if something goes wrong.
  4. Check Companies House and reviews. Trading history, who owns the company, and recent reviews rather than the headline score.
  5. Ask what happens after you sign. Who manages the switch, who chases the supplier, who reminds you before the next end date.
  6. Compare the quotes they produce, on the same start date and term, on annual cost. A broker that only shows unit rates is not showing you enough.

How to choose a business energy broker and how to check a broker is legitimate go through the checks step by step. Broker or comparison site and broker or going direct cover the alternatives.

Questions about comparing brokers

Which is the best business energy broker in the UK?

There is no single best broker, because the right one depends on your size, the suppliers it can quote, how it is paid and the service you need after signing. Compare brokers on commission transparency, supplier panel, dispute-scheme membership, trading history and the quality of the quotes they produce rather than on a ranking.

Are Uswitch and MoneySuperMarket business energy the same as Bionic?

Yes. Both services are provided or operated by Bionic, so a quote through either is a Bionic quote on Bionic’s commission terms, as their own terms pages state.

How many suppliers do energy brokers work with?

It varies and most do not publish a number. Utility Bidder states 20 suppliers, Purely Energy and Utility Saving Expert state 30 or more, and others describe a panel without a figure. We publish the suppliers on our panel on our suppliers page.

Do all energy brokers belong to a dispute scheme?

No. Ofgem requires suppliers to deal only with brokers registered with a qualifying scheme when serving microbusinesses, and the Energy Ombudsman scheme extends to small businesses, but not every broker is listed on the public registers. Check before you sign.

How do I know if an energy broker is reputable?

Check Companies House for trading history and ownership, confirm dispute-scheme membership on the scheme’s own register, read recent reviews rather than the headline score, and ask for the commission on your quote in writing. A reputable broker answers all four without hesitation.

Is a broker better than a comparison site for business energy?

They overlap more than the names suggest, because the main comparison sites route business energy through a broker. The practical difference is whether a named person manages the switch, the renewal calendar and any problems afterwards.
