What happens in the weeks after a business energy contract is signed?
- Day 0: contract agreed. You receive the contract and principal terms from the supplier showing the rates, term, start date and the broker commission in p/kWh. We confirm the start date and the meters covered in writing.
- Days 1–5: registration submitted. The new supplier applies to take over the meter from the start date. If notice is required on the old contract, we have already served it or confirmed you have.
- Days 5–20: objection window. The current supplier can object to the transfer, almost always because the contract has not reached its end date, there is an unpaid balance, or the notice was not received. We monitor for objections and resolve them with you.
- Start date: supply transfers. Nothing physical happens at the site; the meter, cables and network operator stay the same. A meter reading on the day closes the old account and opens the new one. If the meter is not smart, we ask you for the read.
- Weeks 2–6 after start: final bill and first bill. The old supplier issues a final bill to the transfer read; the new supplier issues its first bill, usually a month in arrears. We check both against the contract.
- Ongoing: renewal calendar. The end date goes into our calendar and yours, and we contact you well before the next termination window.
What can go wrong, and what we do about it?
- Objection by the old supplier. Usually an unpaid balance or a notice dispute. We identify the cause, tell you what is needed, and resubmit the registration once it is cleared.
- Wrong rates on the first bill. It happens, typically because the supplier loaded the wrong tariff version. We raise it with the supplier with the contract attached and chase it to a corrected bill.
- Estimated reads. A final bill on an estimate can over- or under-charge. We ask for an actual read on the transfer date and challenge estimates.
- Missed start date. If a registration fails and the start date passes, you may be on out-of-contract rates for a period. We re-register immediately and ask the new supplier to backdate where its process allows.
- Change of circumstances. Moving premises, closing a site or adding a meter during the term all have a process; tell us first and we handle the supplier.
Want this priced for your meters?
Send us a recent bill and we will compare the suppliers on our panel on the same start date and term, and show you the annual cost of each option. No obligation.
Who do I contact once the contract is live?
Us, first, for anything to do with the contract, the switch, a bill query, a change of tenancy or the renewal; you have a direct contact and the office number is 020 8036 5715. The supplier directly for operational matters it alone can act on: emergencies, meter faults, payment arrangements and account logins, and we will tell you which. If a supplier issue is not resolved, we escalate it through the supplier’s complaints process on your behalf, and we tell you what we have done and when.
How are complaints resolved?
If something we have done falls short, tell us and we will investigate and, within 10 business days, send you either a final written resolution or a holding response; if you are still unhappy you can escalate to the Energy Ombudsman. Our complaints procedure sets out the steps. We are registered with the Energy Ombudsman’s scheme for energy brokers, so if a complaint about us is not resolved within eight weeks, or we issue a deadlock letter, a microbusiness or small business can take it to the Ombudsman at no cost, and its decision is binding on us. Complaints about the supplier go through the supplier’s own process first and then to the Ombudsman in the same way.
Are there any fees after you sign?
Our commission is included in the contract rate and disclosed on the quote and in the supplier’s principal terms; there is nothing further to pay us for the switch, the handover or the renewal reminders. The supplier’s own terms govern early termination of the energy contract, which business contracts generally do not allow without a fee based on the remaining volume; we make sure you have seen that clause before you sign rather than after. Fees and commission has the detail.
After-signing questions
How long does a business energy switch take?
Typically four to eight weeks from signing to the new supplier taking over, and it can be lined up further ahead so the new contract starts the day the old one ends. Nothing changes at the site and supply is not interrupted.
Can my old supplier stop the switch?
It can object during the registration window, usually because the contract has not ended, there is an unpaid balance or notice was not received. The objection is resolved by clearing the cause and resubmitting; we handle that with you.
Who do I call if there is a problem with my bill after switching?
Us. We check the first bill against the contract, raise any error with the supplier with the contract attached, and chase it to a corrected bill. Emergencies and meter faults go to the supplier or network operator directly.
Does the broker stay involved after the contract starts?
Yes. The end date goes into our renewal calendar, we check the first bills, we handle changes such as a move or an added meter, and we contact you before the next termination window.
What if I am unhappy with the broker?
Tell us; we investigate and respond in writing within 10 business days, and you can escalate to the Energy Ombudsman if you are still unhappy. If it is not resolved within eight weeks a microbusiness or small business can take it to the Energy Ombudsman, with which we are registered, at no cost, and its decision binds us.
Will I be charged if I want to leave the energy contract early?
The supplier’s terms apply: business contracts generally do not allow early exit without a fee based on the remaining volume. We make sure the clause is understood before signing.
