How do I find my MPRN?

Find My MPRN is the practical process of identifying the unique 6 to 10 digit Meter Point Reference Number for a UK gas supply when the number is not immediately available. The MPRN identifies the gas supply point uniquely in the Xoserve central database. Suppliers, brokers, and other industry parties need the MPRN to set up new contracts, run market comparisons, or process change of tenancy. Four reliable methods are available: the gas bill, the supplier online portal, the free Meter Number Helpline, and a licensed broker with Xoserve access.

Finding the MPRN is one of the most common practical tasks new business owners face when they move into a premises. Without the MPRN, no contract can be set up and the customer remains on default rates until the number is identified.

Why you need the MPRN

Finding your MPRN means locating the unique number that identifies your gas supply point, which you’ll need for any quote or switch. It’s printed on your gas bill, and Xoserve’s Find My Supplier service can provide it if the bill is missing.

For the full explanation, see What Is an MPRN – Decoding Your Business Gas Bill.

The MPRN is required for:

  • Setting up a new gas supply contract with any supplier.
  • Running a market comparison through a broker.
  • Processing a change of tenancy.
  • Querying historical bills or consumption data.
  • Investigating any account or billing issue with the supplier.

Without the MPRN, the supplier or broker cannot identify the specific supply point and cannot process the request.

On the gas bill

The easiest source of the MPRN is the gas bill. Most suppliers print the MPRN clearly on the front or second page, typically alongside the supply address. Look for:

  • “MPRN” label followed by 6 to 10 digits.
  • “Meter Point Reference Number” written out in full.
  • The number near the supply address or account details.

Both electronic and paper bills include the MPRN. If you have access to recent bill correspondence, this is the fastest route.

Supplier online portal

Most UK gas suppliers operate online customer portals showing account details including the MPRN. Steps:

  1. Log in to the supplier portal with your account credentials.
  2. Navigate to the supply or meter section.
  3. The MPRN appears against each gas supply on the account.

If you do not have portal access, the supplier customer service line can provide it after standard identification.

The Meter Number Helpline

For customers who do not have a bill or supplier portal access, the Find My Supplier phone line (0870 608 1524) charges 7p a minute plus your phone provider’s access charge:

  • Phone: 0870 608 1524.
  • Open during standard business hours.
  • Provide the postcode and address of the property.
  • The agent looks up the MPRN in the Xoserve central database and provides it on the call.

The Helpline is useful when moving into a property without inherited documentation, or when the previous occupant left without providing supplier or account details.

Via a broker

Licensed energy brokers with Xoserve access can look up the MPRN from an address. The process:

  1. Contact a licensed broker.
  2. Sign a Letter of Authority allowing the broker to query Xoserve on your behalf.
  3. Provide the address.
  4. The broker returns the MPRN, current supplier, and basic supply details within minutes.

This route is most useful when the customer is engaging a broker for procurement anyway, as the MPRN lookup is part of the broker initial work.

If you do not know your supplier

For customers who do not know which supplier currently serves the meter, the same Meter Number Helpline can identify both:

  • The MPRN.
  • The current registered supplier.

The Find My Supplier service operated by Xoserve (findmysupplier.energy) also identifies the current supplier from a postcode. Find My Supplier returns the supplier; the supplier can then provide the MPRN.

For change of tenancy situations where the previous occupant did not provide supplier details, this combination of the Meter Number Helpline and supplier identification is the standard route.

How do I find my MPRN FAQs

How do I find my MPRN?

Check your gas bill (front or second page), log in to the supplier online portal, call the Meter Number Helpline (0870 608 1524), or contact an energy broker with Xoserve access.

What is the Meter Number Helpline?

A free service operated by the UK gas industry. Phone 0870 608 1524 and provide the postcode and address. The agent returns the MPRN from the Xoserve central database.

How many digits is an MPRN?

Between 6 and 10 digits. Newer connections tend to have longer numbers; older ones are shorter.

Is the MPRN on the gas meter?

No. The number on the meter is the meter serial number, not the MPRN. The MPRN appears on the bill or in the supplier portal, not on the physical meter.

Can I find my MPRN without a bill?

Yes. Call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 and provide the postcode and address. The agent looks up the MPRN. Energy brokers with Xoserve access can also provide it.

What if I do not know my gas supplier?

Use Find My Supplier (operated by the Energy Networks Association) or call the Meter Number Helpline. Both can identify the current supplier from a postcode.

Does the MPRN change when I move?

No. The MPRN is permanent for the supply point. When you move into a new premises, you inherit the existing MPRN. When you move out, the MPRN stays with the property for the next occupant.

How do I find my MPRN for a newly built property?

For a brand new gas connection, the MPRN is allocated by the GDN as part of the new connection process and notified to the customer. There is no existing MPRN to find.
