Warehouse gas contracts: radiant heating, dock heaters, mezzanine offices
Warehouse gas usage looks nothing like an office. Big-volume sites heat huge floor areas with radiant tube heaters or warm-air units, dock-area heaters cycle as roller shutters open and close, and the office mezzanine has separate heating altogether. Standard small-business gas tariffs don’t price that mix. We compare suppliers across the open UK market with warehouse heating profiles in mind. High winter peaks, near-zero summer.
The mechanics of switching gas are the same as for any commercial site. We cover them in our guide to switching business gas. But warehouse-specific questions matter: how the contract handles seasonal demand swings, whether you’re on a daily metered (DM) connection driven by total volume, and how to coordinate gas alongside electricity for forklift charging and racking lighting.
Our wider business gas service covers the whole UK market. For logistics operators we also look at multi-site consolidation across regional DCs, CCL relief eligibility if you qualify under a Climate Change Agreement, and biomethane options for sites with customer-driven sustainability requirements.
Seasonal demand and the heating curve
Warehouse gas demand is dominated by space heating. Your December usage might be 8x your June usage. That swing matters because some suppliers price the seasonal curve differently. Flatter pricing favours sites with smooth demand, while seasonal tariffs can suit warehouses if structured well. We model both and recommend based on your actual AMR data, not a generic seasonal assumption.
Multi-site distribution networks
If you operate regional DCs or a national fulfilment network, consolidating gas onto one supplier across every site usually beats keeping each on its own renewal. Volume across multiple sites unlocks better pricing tiers, and one renewal calendar is easier for finance to manage than twelve. We model the consolidated quote against keeping sites separate and show the numbers.
CCL and CCA for eligible operators
Some logistics operations. Particularly cold storage and refrigerated distribution. Qualify for Climate Change Agreement relief, which cuts CCL by around 90%. The agreement runs through the relevant trade association. We’ll flag whether you’re likely to qualify and route you to suppliers who apply the relief correctly from day one of the new contract.
| What we compare | What it means for your warehouse |
|---|---|
| Unit rate (p/kWh) | The biggest cost. Compounds across winter heating months. |
| Standing charge | Daily fixed cost per meter. |
| DM vs NDM | Higher-volume sites benefit from DM pricing structure. |
| CCL / CCA treatment | Whether the supplier applies relief cleanly if you qualify. |
| Contract length | 1–3 years; longer locks rate, shorter keeps flexibility. |
| Biomethane option | Renewable gas for sites with customer-driven ESG requirements. |
