Corner shop gas: small volume, big standing-charge impact
Most corner shops use gas just for heating the shop floor and back office, with the occasional hot-water tank for the staff kitchen. Volume is low. Usually under 30,000 kWh a year. But the standing charge component eats more of the bill than it does for higher-volume sites. That makes choosing the right supplier especially worthwhile. We compare across the open UK market with small-volume retail in mind.
The mechanics of switching gas are the same as for any commercial site. We cover them in our guide to switching business gas. But corner-shop questions are practical: how to stop standing charges eating the bill, what happens when you take over a new shop mid-contract, and how to consolidate multiple shops if you’ve expanded.
Our wider business gas service covers the whole UK market. For independent shops we also look at small-business specific tariffs, whether your last contract was rolled over at deemed rate, and how a flat usage profile lets you push for a tighter unit rate.
Standing charge is the hidden cost
At low volume, the daily standing charge is a much bigger share of your gas bill than at high-volume sites. Two suppliers can offer the same unit rate but charge wildly different standing charges. We always quote the combined annual cost. Unit rate × estimated kWh + standing charge × 365. So you see the real bill, not just the headline rate that gets advertised.
Multi-store and franchise networks
If you run several convenience stores or a franchise network, consolidating gas onto one supplier usually beats running each renewal separately. Volume-based unit rates, unified billing, and one renewal cycle to manage. We model the consolidated quote against keeping each shop on its own renewal. The volume tier change almost always wins.
Taking over a new shop
When you take over premises, the gas supply moves into your name through a Change of Tenancy. You’ll usually be put on a deemed contract rate by default. Often expensive. We can quote and switch you immediately so you’re not sitting on the deemed rate for three months. The whole thing takes 4–8 weeks from your signed contract.
| What we compare | What it means for your shop |
|---|---|
| Unit rate (p/kWh) | Matters less at low volume than at high. |
| Standing charge | Big share of bill on small shops. Small daily difference compounds. |
| Contract length | 1–3 years; longer locks rate, shorter keeps flexibility. |
| Volume discounts | Multi-store consolidation unlocks better pricing. |
| Out-of-contract risk | What rate you fall onto if a new contract isn’t signed. |
| Deemed rate avoidance | Quick switch when taking over premises. |
