A month in the job
Strip away the jargon and an energy consultant managing a mid-sized estate does a recognisable set of things each month. Early in the month the invoices arrive and get validated against the contract and the meter data; anything wrong is disputed. Through the month the wholesale market is watched, because on flexible contracts there are buying decisions to make and on fixed ones there are renewals to time. Consumption data is pulled and compared to budget, and anything odd, a site using twice what it did last year, is chased. Towards month end a report goes to whoever owns the energy line, with cost, consumption, variance and what is coming up.
Around that routine sit the projects: a tender for an estate whose contracts are aligning next spring, an ESOS assessment with a deadline, a solar feasibility study for the distribution centre, a capacity review across the warehouses. The routine keeps the money right; the projects move it.
The tasks, grouped
| Routine | Project |
|---|---|
| Invoice validation and dispute handling | Procurement tenders and contract negotiation |
| Market monitoring and buying execution on flexible contracts | Procurement strategy and hedging policy |
| Consumption monitoring and anomaly chasing | Energy audits and efficiency project appraisal |
| Budget tracking and variance reporting | ESOS, SECR and other compliance deliverables |
| Site and meter register maintenance | Metering strategy and smart meter rollouts |
| Supplier account management and queries | Solar, storage and on-site generation feasibility |
| Renewal calendar and termination notices | Carbon baselines and net zero plans |

What good looks like
A good consultant is numerate first: comfortable rebuilding a bill from a rate schedule, reading half-hourly data, and explaining a variance in one sentence. They know the market mechanics, the network charges, the levies and the regulatory calendar well enough to spot when something is wrong on a bill or in a quote. They are transparent about money, their own included. And they say no: no, you do not need a flexible contract at this size; no, that solar quote does not stack up; no, the renewal letter is the best option this time.
The energy consultancy page covers when the role is worth paying for; fees covers how it is charged.

Frequently asked questions
What does an energy consultant do every month?
Validates invoices, watches the market and executes purchases on flexible contracts, monitors consumption against budget, maintains the site and meter register, manages supplier queries and reports to the business.
What qualifications does an energy consultant need?
There is no mandatory qualification. Relevant backgrounds include energy management, engineering, finance and procurement; for ESOS, lead assessors must be on an approved register.
Is an energy consultant the same as an energy manager?
An energy manager is usually an in-house role; a consultant is external and often covers several clients. The work overlaps heavily.
Do consultants deal with suppliers on my behalf?
Yes, under a letter of authority that lets them obtain data, raise disputes and negotiate contracts without taking on your liabilities.
How do I know if a consultant is doing a good job?
Bills are right, renewals happen on time at market prices, reports are clear, and the consultant has told you no at least once.
Does Clearsight Energy provide this service?
Yes, for businesses whose size or complexity warrants it, alongside the broker service most of our customers use.
