How business gas works in Leeds

Somewhere in Leeds this morning a kitchen fired up its ranges, a warehouse heater kicked in and an office boiler started its cycle. All three got their gas through pipes owned by Northern Gas Networks. None of them pay that company directly. The network carries the gas, a licensed shipper moves it on the supplier’s behalf, and the supplier sends the bill. That’s the bit you can change.

The commercial rules are the same wherever you are in Britain. There’s no price cap on business gas, no published tariff to pick off a shelf, and no cooling-off period once you’ve signed. Every quote is built for your meter, from how much you use, your credit history, the meter type and where the wholesale market happens to be sitting that day.

What’s local is the transportation charge. Leeds sits in the North East local distribution zone, which covers Yorkshire. Northern Gas Networks runs the pipes from the Humber up to the Scottish border, so Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and York businesses all share the same regional transportation charges.

The Leeds financial district is mostly electric, but walk ten minutes in any direction and you hit gas. Hotels along Wellington Street, the food and drink units around Kirkstall Road, the distribution sheds out at Stourton and the Aire Valley. Leeds also has a large stock of 1990s office buildings with gas boilers that were sized for a fuller building than most of them hold now, which can show up as a standing charge that looks high against the usage.

Who runs the pipes and who sends the bill

Northern Gas Networks owns and maintains the local pipes, answers the emergency line and connects new supplies. It’s paid through transportation charges your supplier collects inside the unit rate and standing charge, under price controls set by Ofgem. You don’t pick your gas network and you can’t switch it. The supplier is the moving part.

Every supply point has an MPRN, the Meter Point Reference Number printed on each bill. That number, not your account number, is what a supplier needs before they can quote. If your site was connected more recently through an independent gas transporter rather than the main network, the MPRN works exactly the same way. Only the pipe owner differs.

Electricity is a separate network with a separate company. In Leeds that’s Northern Powergrid. If you buy both fuels, our business electricity in Leeds page covers that side, and business energy covers buying the two together.

What goes into a Leeds business gas price

Four lines make up the bill. The unit rate does most of the work, the standing charge quietly adds up, and the other two are taxes you can sometimes reduce but never negotiate.

Part of the billWhat it isWhat sets it
Unit ratePence for every kWh of gas you use. The biggest line on most bills.Wholesale gas on the day you ask, Leeds’s regional transportation charges, and the supplier’s margin.
Standing chargeA fixed daily fee for staying connected, charged whether you use gas or not.Your meter type and network region. A low unit rate paired with a high standing charge can cost more over a year, so compare the annual total.
Climate Change LevyA government tax on business energy, shown as its own line at 0.801p per kWh from April 2026.Set nationally. Some manufacturers and charities can claim relief.
VAT20 percent as standard on business gas.Drops to 5 percent for very low usage and for charitable non-business activity, but only if you claim it with a declaration.

After those four, the number that matters most is how much gas you use in a year. Under roughly 25,000 kWh you’re a small user and suppliers price you off a matrix. Above about 150,000 kWh every quote is bespoke. The largest Leeds sites, past 500 MWh a year, can buy in tranches on a flexible contract rather than fixing everything on one afternoon.

Fixed, variable or flexible

Most small and medium businesses in Leeds end up on a fixed rate for one to three years. It isn’t automatically the safe choice. You’re paying for certainty, and if wholesale prices fall halfway through the term you’ll watch newer contracts come in lower and be able to do nothing about it.

Contract typeHow it pricesWho it tends to suit
FixedUnit rate and standing charge locked for the term, usually one to three years. Most Leeds businesses. Budget certainty, at the cost of a premium and no benefit if wholesale falls.
VariableTracks the market up and down, normally with a margin on top.Businesses that can absorb a bad month and want to follow prices down.
FlexibleYou buy gas in portions across the year rather than fixing everything at once.Sites above about 500 MWh a year, or multi-site groups buying as a portfolio.

Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Most suppliers want notice in writing somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. Miss it and you can be rolled onto out-of-contract rates, which typically run 50 to 80 percent above a negotiated deal. It’s the single most expensive thing a busy Leeds business does with its gas, and it’s entirely avoidable.

Switching business gas supplier in Leeds

Nobody comes out. No pipe is touched and the meter stays where it is. Once you sign with a new supplier they arrange the transfer with your old one, the MPRN stays the same, and the only thing that changes is the name on the bill. The transfer itself can go through in as little as five working days. Your existing contract’s notice period is what sets the real timeline.

You choose the contract. Fixed, variable or flexible, with the trade-offs explained in plain terms rather than sold.
We deal with the rest. Notice to your current supplier, the transfer itself, and a reminder well before the next termination window.

Leeds businesses we work with

The mechanics are identical for every meter. Usage patterns aren’t. A restaurant burns gas in two peaks a day, a school is dark for thirteen weeks a year, a factory runs a steady load that suppliers find cheaper to serve. The sector pages go into that detail: business gas for offices, business gas for manufacturing and industrial, business gas for logistics and warehousing and business gas for hospitality, pubs and restaurants.

For the national picture start with business gas. If you run more than one site, multi-site business energy management explains how we handle an estate as one portfolio, and what an energy broker does covers how we’re paid.

“Clearsight Energy have provided a quick and efficient service to our Parish Council. No pressurised selling was involved, just clear and constructive advice. We will look to using them in the future when our other utility contracts are up for renewal.”

Frequently asked questions

Who supplies business gas in Leeds?

Any licensed UK business gas supplier can take on a Leeds meter. The pipes belong to Northern Gas Networks and never change hands. What changes when you switch is the supplier and the price, so the useful question isn’t who owns the network. It’s which supplier will offer the right contract for the way you use gas.

How is business gas priced in Leeds?

A unit rate per kWh, a daily standing charge, Climate Change Levy and VAT. The unit rate is built from wholesale prices on the day you ask, Leeds’s regional transportation charges and the supplier’s margin, then adjusted for your consumption, credit profile and meter type.

Is business gas different from domestic gas?

Same gas, same pipes, different rules. There’s no price cap on business gas, no published tariffs and no cooling-off period. Prices are quoted per meter, contracts are binding on signature and VAT is 20 percent rather than 5 percent for most premises.

Should a Leeds business fix its gas price?

Usually, if budget certainty matters more than catching a falling market. The unit rate and standing charge stay put for the term. You pay a premium for that and you won’t benefit if wholesale prices drop. Larger sites often do better on a flexible contract that buys in stages.

Can I switch gas supplier in Leeds without an interruption?

Yes. The switch is paperwork. The new supplier arranges the transfer, the gas keeps flowing through the same pipe and meter, and nobody needs to visit. The only thing that changes is who bills you.

My business gas contract ends next month. What should I do?

Check the termination window first. If notice is due, serve it in writing today. Then get quotes based on your MPRN and recent consumption, compare the annual cost rather than the headline unit rate, and line the new contract up to start the day the old one ends so you never touch out-of-contract rates.
