Pub and restaurant gas contracts: kitchen-led, service-hour driven
Pubs and restaurants live and die on margin, and gas is one of the few cost lines you can renegotiate without changing how the kitchen runs. Ranges and chargrills come on hours before service, hot water cylinders feed wash-up and cleaning, and the heating runs through every winter shift. We compare suppliers across the open UK market with the hospitality usage shape in mind, not as if you ran a corner shop.
The mechanics of switching gas are the same as for any commercial site. We cover them in our guide to switching business gas. But hospitality-specific decisions matter: how the contract handles kitchen-only meters in a leased pub, whether the renewal timing exposes you to winter pricing, and how to manage gas alongside electricity, water, and card payments without juggling four renewal dates.
Our wider business gas service covers the whole UK market. For hospitality operators we also factor in multi-site consolidation across small chains, lease-driven complications around metering, and biomethane options if green is part of your brand.
Winter renewal exposure
If your gas contract is set to renew in October or November, you’ll be quoted under winter pricing pressure. Wholesale is most volatile then. We try to time renewals for the quieter summer market where possible. Even a one-month shift in renewal timing can change the headline rate. Where you’re locked into an autumn renewal, we’ll model 12-, 24-, and 36-month options so you can see which window gives you best value.
Leased pubs and metering
If you operate a leased pub on a tied or partially tied arrangement, the gas meter might be in the pubco’s name or it might be in yours. Where it’s in yours, we can switch it directly. Where it’s tied to the pubco, your switching options are limited but we can still help. Including writing the case to the pubco for letting you renegotiate where the savings stack up.
Multi-site operators
For chains and small groups, consolidating gas onto one supplier across all sites delivers volume pricing and one renewal calendar. We pull every site onto a single comparison so the operations director isn’t chasing twelve different renewals across the year.
| What we compare | What it means for your site |
|---|---|
| Unit rate (p/kWh) | The biggest cost. Compounds across heating and kitchen hours. |
| Standing charge | Daily fixed cost per meter. |
| Contract length | 1–3 years; longer locks rate, shorter keeps flexibility. |
| Renewal timing | Summer renewals beat autumn ones on winter exposure. |
| Green gas option | Biomethane-backed tariff for sustainability-led brands. |
| Mid-term flex | Whether seasonal swings trigger any penalty. |
