Golf club electricity: clubhouse, irrigation pumps, EV buggies, floodlights

Golf clubs have a load profile that doesn’t fit a standard small-business contract. The clubhouse runs kitchen, bar, function rooms, and pro shop for long days. Irrigation pumps run overnight through the growing season. EV buggy charging adds steady evening demand. Driving range floodlights pull serious load in winter evenings. We compare suppliers across the open UK market with all that in mind, not as if you ran an office.

The mechanics of switching are the same as for any commercial site. We walk through them in our guide to switching business electricity. But golf-specific questions matter: how the supplier prices seasonal demand swings, how to handle multiple meters (clubhouse, greenkeeper’s compound, halfway hut), and whether time-of-use tariffs help with overnight irrigation.

Our wider business electricity service covers the whole UK market. For golf clubs we also look at capacity charges, any kVA bill items if you’ve got a half-hourly meter, and how on-site solar can be priced into the new contract.

Seasonal demand and 12-month contracts

Your peak months are May to September for irrigation, October to March for floodlights and clubhouse heating. That split makes you reasonably flat across the year, which is actually good news for pricing. Suppliers favour predictable consumption. We’ll lock in a contract that prices to that profile, not to a generic seasonal swing.

Multiple meters across the site

Clubhouses, greenkeeper compounds, pump stations, halfway huts, and starter sheds often each have their own meter and supplier. We pull them onto a single comparison so you can see whether consolidating to one supplier beats keeping them separate. Usually the volume discount makes consolidation the right call, but not always. We’ll show the numbers.

EV buggy charging. Present and future

If you’ve already moved to an electric buggy fleet, the contract needs to price overnight charging properly. If you’re planning the switch, build flex into the new contract so you don’t end up renegotiating six months in. We’ll route to suppliers whose tariffs handle that demand growth without break fees.

What we compareWhat it means for your club
Unit rate (p/kWh)The biggest cost. Small differences compound across clubhouse hours.
Standing charge per meterYou pay it on every meter. Adds up across clubhouse, compound, pump house.
Time-of-use optionsDay/night split valuable for overnight irrigation and EV buggy charging.
Capacity / kVA chargesFixed cost on half-hourly meters. Relevant for larger clubhouses.
Green tariff optionRenewable-backed contracts if it fits your sustainability position.
Contract length1–3 years; longer locks rate, shorter keeps flexibility.
