Specialist water support for UK leisure and fitness operators
A gym chain we work with runs eighteen sites across the Midlands. Eight have swimming pools, four have spa facilities, all of them have showers and changing rooms running from 6am to 10pm. The water bill is the second-largest utility line in the business after electricity. It had never been reviewed since the chain started rolling out in 2016.
Leisure and fitness water is high-volume by sector standards. Showers, towel laundry, pool top-up, spa facilities, and a customer base that uses the facility specifically for the water amenities. The cost sits at a level where even a small unit-rate improvement is meaningful, and the scale of consumption means trade effluent often applies.
This page covers how we help UK leisure operators review their water arrangements. Our business water service covers the open UK market across every commercial sector, and the mechanics of switching are in our main business water switching guide.
How we help leisure and fitness operators
We start by mapping every meter at every site into a single view. For gym chains and leisure groups this is usually three to six meters per location. Main building, pool, spa, sometimes a separate meter on the studio block. Each gets reviewed against actual use.
From there we work through the retail rate, the standing charges across the estate, trade effluent where shower drainage volumes warrant it, and surface water drainage on car parks and outdoor pool areas. Pool top-up water is a significant line on the bill at any site with one, and its treatment in the contract is worth checking.
Why leisure water bills are different from other commercial accounts
| Feature | Standard SME | Leisure / fitness site |
|---|---|---|
| Consumption volume | Modest | High. Showers, laundry, pool top-up, hot water |
| Demand pattern | Working hours | Extended. 6am to 10pm, seven days |
| Pool water | None | Significant on any site with a pool. Daily top-up and periodic backwash |
| Hot water load | Modest | Heavy. Showers, laundry, spa, sauna |
| Trade effluent | Rare | Sometimes applies on sites with on-site catering or high-volume backwash discharge |
| Multi-site | Less common | Common. Gym chains, leisure trusts, hotel-attached health clubs |
Pools, spas and high-volume consumption
Any site with a pool carries a significant daily water cost. Top-up to compensate for evaporation and bather load, periodic backwashing of filters, fresh-fill cycles every few years. On a busy pool the daily top-up is meaningful even before backwash is added.
Where backwash discharge volumes are high, trade effluent may apply. Particularly in commercial pools with regular backwash cycles. We’ll review whether the consent (if there is one) reflects the actual operation and engage the wholesaler if it doesn’t.
Showers, laundry and changing-room water
Shower flow rates vary widely across leisure facilities, and on busy days the cumulative volume is substantial. Where the gym provides towels, the towel laundry is a meaningful additional line. Usually heavier than guest-room laundry in a hotel because turn-over is faster.
We don’t engineer flow restriction or laundry process changes (that’s facilities and operations). But knowing what proportion of the water spend is going to showers, laundry and pool helps anchor the contract review against actual operations.
Multi-site leisure groups and trusts
Gym chains, leisure trusts (operating on behalf of local authorities) and hotel-attached health clubs typically run portfolios across multiple regions. Each site brings its own historic contract. The result is usually three to six retailers across the estate.
Portfolio consolidation onto one retailer with a single annual review simplifies admin and gives consistent pricing. For local-authority leisure trusts, framework alignment is sometimes a consideration; we’ll work alongside whatever arrangement applies.
How a leisure water review works
Every site, every meter, every renewal date. Pool, spa and laundry meters identified separately.
Where applicable, consent values reviewed against current operations. Surface water drainage checked against actual layout.
