Sports ground gas contracts: pavilion heating, showers, hot water
Sports ground gas use centres on the pavilion. Changing-room showers after matches and training, hot water in the kitchen for matchday catering, and central heating from October through March. Pavilion gas demand is bursty: high during competition weekends and training nights, low between fixtures. Standard small-business tariffs don’t always price that variability fairly. We compare suppliers across the open UK market with the matchday demand profile in mind.
The mechanics of switching gas are the same as for any commercial site. We cover them in our guide to switching business gas. But ground-specific questions matter: how the contract handles seasonal variability, whether the club qualifies for charity-status VAT relief, and how to coordinate gas across pavilion, any function/social-club building, and the groundsman’s compound.
Our wider business gas service covers the whole UK market. For sports grounds we also look at biomethane options where governing-body sustainability targets apply, and how shared-use multi-sport sites can consolidate multiple meters.
Matchday variability and contract flex
Pavilion demand spikes around fixtures. Some suppliers price for that variability fairly, others penalise it through mid-term consumption bands. We route to suppliers whose contracts handle event-driven spikes cleanly rather than treating them as anomalous use.
Charity-status clubs and VAT relief
Where the club operates as a registered charity (most amateur clubs and community sports trusts do), the 5% VAT rate applies to gas used for charitable activity, plus full CCL relief. The supplier needs the VAT declaration form to apply it. We submit it alongside the contract so the lower rate kicks in from day one.
Function rooms and bar trading
Function-room trading creates additional gas demand on top of fixture and training use. Particularly if the bar kitchen runs functions through the week. That changes the contract sizing. We pull AMR data, model the actual current usage shape, and route to suppliers who price function-driven demand fairly rather than treating you as a small-business pavilion only.
| What we compare | What it means for your ground |
|---|---|
| Unit rate (p/kWh) | The biggest cost. Compounds across winter heating and matchday hot water. |
| Standing charge per meter | Daily fixed cost. Adds up on multi-meter sites. |
| VAT & CCL treatment | 5% rate where charity status applies, handled cleanly. |
| Matchday flex | Whether seasonal fixture spikes trigger any penalty. |
| Biomethane option | Renewable gas if governing-body targets apply. |
| Contract length | 1–3 years; longer locks rate, shorter keeps flexibility. |
