How business gas works in Dundee
Somewhere in Dundee this morning a Waterfront restaurant lit its ranges, a unit on the Kingsway turned its heaters on and a Broughty Ferry hotel brought its boilers up for breakfast. All three got their gas through pipes owned by SGN, through its Scotland network. None of them pays SGN directly. The network carries the gas, a shipper moves it on the supplier’s behalf, and the supplier sends the bill. The supplier is the part you can compare.
The rules are national. There is no price cap on business gas, no published tariff and no cooling-off period once you have signed. Every quote is built for one meter, from how much it uses and when, the credit profile behind it, the meter type and where wholesale gas is trading on the day.
What is local is the transportation charge, and the edges of the grid. Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Invergowrie and the estates along the Kingsway are on the mains, all within SGN’s Scotland zone, so the network part of your bill is set on the same regional basis as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Out in rural Angus and Perthshire many premises run on oil or LPG instead.
Dundee’s gas demand is mostly heating. The games studios and tech firms in the centre and at the Technology Park are electricity-heavy and gas-light; Ninewells and the universities run large round-the-clock heating loads; the Kingsway and Claverhouse estates run manufacturing and distribution with seasonal heating; and the Waterfront and Broughty Ferry hospitality trade burns gas in short daily peaks.
Who runs the pipes in Dundee and who sends the bill
SGN owns and maintains the pipes under Dundee, runs the gas emergency line and connects new supplies. It is paid through transportation charges your supplier collects within the unit rate and standing charge, under Ofgem price controls. You cannot choose or switch your network. The supplier is the moving part.
Every supply point has an MPRN, the Meter Point Reference Number printed on each bill. That number, not your account number, is what a supplier needs before they can quote. If your Dundee site was connected more recently through an independent gas transporter rather than SGN’s network, the MPRN works exactly the same way. Only the pipe owner differs.
Electricity is a separate network with a separate company. In Dundee that is Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks. If you buy both fuels, our business electricity in Dundee page covers that side, and business energy covers buying the two together.
What goes into a Dundee business gas price
Four lines make up the bill. The unit rate does most of the work, the standing charge quietly adds up, and the other two are taxes you can sometimes reduce but never negotiate.
| Part of the bill | What it is | What sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Unit rate | Pence for every kWh of gas used. The largest line on most bills. | Wholesale gas on the day you ask, the regional transportation charges for your zone and the supplier’s margin. |
| Standing charge | A fixed daily fee for the connection, charged whether or not any gas is used. | Meter type and network region. A low unit rate paired with a high standing charge can cost more over a year, so compare the annual total. |
| Climate Change Levy | A government tax on business energy, shown as its own line at 0.801p per kWh from April 2026. | Set nationally. Some manufacturers and charities can claim relief. |
| VAT | 20 percent as standard on business gas. | Drops to 5 percent automatically for very low usage (the de minimis thresholds are 33 kWh a day of electricity or 145 kWh a day of gas), and for charitable non-business or domestic use if you claim it with a VAT declaration. |
After those four, the number that matters most is annual consumption. Under roughly 25,000 kWh you are a small user and suppliers price from a matrix. Above about 150,000 kWh every quote is bespoke. The largest Dundee sites, past 500 MWh a year, can buy in tranches on a flexible contract rather than fixing everything on one afternoon.
Compare business gas prices for your Dundee meter
Send us a recent bill, or just the MPRN and a rough idea of annual usage, and we will come back with side-by-side pricing from the suppliers on our panel. No obligation, and we tell you plainly if your current deal is the one to keep.
Fixed, variable or flexible for a Dundee business
Most small and medium businesses in Dundee end up on a fixed rate for one to three years. It is not automatically the safe choice. You are paying for certainty, and if wholesale prices fall halfway through the term you will watch newer contracts come in lower and be able to do nothing about it.
| Contract type | How it prices | Who it tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | Unit rate and standing charge locked for the term, usually one to three years. | Most Dundee businesses. Budget certainty, at the cost of a premium and no benefit if wholesale falls. |
| Variable | Tracks the market up and down, normally with a margin on top. | Businesses that can absorb a bad month and want to follow prices down. |
| Flexible | Gas bought in portions across the year rather than fixed in one go. | Sites above about 500 MWh a year, or multi-site groups buying as a portfolio. |
Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Larger businesses are usually asked for written notice somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. If you are a microbusiness, Ofgem caps the notice a supplier can require at 30 days, and many microbusiness fixed-term contracts need no notice at all. Miss it and you can be moved onto out-of-contract rates, which can run 50 percent or more above a negotiated deal. It is one of the most expensive things that can happen to a business gas account, and one of the easiest to prevent.
Switching business gas supplier in Dundee
Nobody comes out. No pipe is touched and the meter stays where it is. Once you sign with a new supplier they arrange the transfer with your old one, the MPRN stays the same, and the only thing that changes is the name on the bill. The transfer itself can go through in as little as five working days. Your existing contract’s notice period is what sets the real timeline.
What a business gas comparison looks like in Dundee
A comparison is not a list of unit rates. For a Dundee meter we start with the MPRN and twelve months of consumption, then price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel so the figures are like for like. Each quote is shown as an annual cost, with the standing charge, Climate Change Levy and VAT included, because a cheap-looking unit rate attached to a high daily charge is a common way to end up paying more.
We also check three things most renewal letters leave out: whether your meter class matches what you actually use, whether you qualify for reduced VAT or Climate Change Levy relief, and whether the termination terms on the new contract are ones you can live with in three years’ time. If your current supplier’s renewal is the best option, we say so.

Dundee businesses we work with
Dundee’s gas users are led by a hospital and university estate, then hospitality on the Waterfront and in Broughty Ferry, manufacturing and distribution along the Kingsway, and offices and studios in the centre. The sector pages go into that detail: business gas for offices, business gas for hospitality, pubs and restaurants, business gas for manufacturing and industrial sites and business gas for logistics and warehousing.
For the national picture start with business gas. If you run more than one site, multi-site business energy management explains how we handle an estate as one portfolio, and what an energy broker does covers how we are paid.
“Clearsight Energy have provided a quick and efficient service to our Parish Council. No pressurised selling was involved, just clear and constructive advice. We will look to using them in the future when our other utility contracts are up for renewal.”

Frequently asked questions
Who supplies business gas in Dundee?
Any licensed UK business gas supplier can take on a Dundee meter. The pipes belong to SGN and never change hands. Switching changes the supplier and the price, not the network.
Is Dundee in the same gas zone as Edinburgh and Aberdeen?
Yes. The whole of Scotland sits in SGN’s Scotland network, so the regional transportation charges are set on the same basis. That is different from electricity, where Dundee and Edinburgh are on different distribution companies.
Our Angus or Perthshire premises are not on mains gas. Can you help?
If the site runs on oil or LPG there is no MPRN to switch, so a mains-gas comparison does not apply. We can still review the electricity supply, and if a mains connection is realistic our meter installation team can explain what is involved.
Where is the MPRN on a Dundee gas bill?
The Meter Point Reference Number, up to ten digits, is printed on every bill near the meter details. It identifies the supply point rather than your account and is what a supplier needs before quoting. It does not change when you switch.
Can a Dundee restaurant switch gas supplier without closing?
Yes. Switching is paperwork between suppliers. The gas keeps flowing through the same pipe and meter and the only change is who bills you.
Does Clearsight Energy cover Perth, Arbroath and Fife for gas?
Yes. The mains-gas parts of Angus, Perthshire and Fife all sit in SGN’s Scotland network and we compare for any connected business meter in them.
How much notice does a Dundee business need to give its current gas supplier?
Check the contract. Most suppliers require written notice between 30 and 180 days before the end date, and some still move smaller customers onto out-of-contract rates if it is missed. Serving notice does not commit you to switching; it keeps the option open.
Can several Dundee sites go on one business gas contract?
Usually yes. A multi-site contract brings every MPRN under one supplier, one end date and one set of terms, and larger portfolios can buy on a flexible basis. We compare the estate as a whole rather than site by site.
Does a Dundee business need a smart meter to switch gas supplier?
No. Any meter type can be switched. Some suppliers offer to fit a smart or AMR meter after the switch, which is optional for most sites and useful for accurate billing.
What if my Dundee premises are on an independent gas transporter?
Only the pipe owner differs. Your MPRN works the same way and any licensed supplier can quote. Some suppliers price IGT sites slightly differently because of the transporter’s charges, which is one more reason to compare several rather than accept the first renewal offer.
How is Clearsight Energy paid for comparing business gas in Dundee?
By the supplier you choose, through a commission built into the contract rate. We show the pricing side by side and explain the trade-offs; you decide. How we make our money sets it out in full.
