How do you compare business electricity prices in Hull?
Start with a recent bill. Hull sits on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire licence area, MPAN prefix 23, and the network charges inside your unit rate are set for that region whichever supplier you use. What a comparison changes is the wholesale timing, the supplier’s margin, the standing charge and the contract shape.
Clearsight Energy compares business electricity for Hull and the East Riding across the suppliers on our panel, prices every quote to the MPAN on your bill, and handles the switch end to end.
- Network operator. Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire licence).
- MPAN prefix. 23.
- Switching time. Four to eight weeks from signed contract, with no interruption to supply.
- Contract types. Fixed, pass-through or flexible, depending on size and appetite for risk.
- What is negotiable. Wholesale timing, supplier margin, standing charge, contract length and whether network charges are fixed or passed through.
Hull’s electricity demand is shaped by the estuary. The docks and the logistics parks along Hedon Road run heavy, round-the-clock loads; Saltend and the process sites east of the city are among the biggest consumers in Yorkshire; the renewables and marine supply chain around Alexandra Dock has grown fast on sites with capacity to spare. Back in the Old Town and the Fruit Market it is independent hospitality in converted warehouses, and across Sutton Fields and Kingswood it is retail and distribution. Each of those is quoted differently, and most of them have never had the comparison done properly.
This page covers how a Hull business electricity bill is built, who runs the wires, where the money goes, and how to compare suppliers on an annual-cost basis rather than a headline unit rate. If you would rather skip the reading and get prices for your meter, start here.
Where do Hull businesses most often overpay for electricity
Almost every overpaying Hull bill we see comes down to one of five things, and none of them is the wholesale market.
A rolled-over contract nobody renewed
Miss the termination window and most suppliers move you onto out-of-contract rates that can run 50 percent or more above a negotiated price. We see it most in family-run firms on the industrial estates, where the renewal letter went to an office nobody sits in any more.
Dock-side capacity nobody has reviewed
Units around the docks and along Hedon Road were often connected with generous supply capacity for a previous tenant. If your maximum demand is well under the agreed kVA, you pay a capacity charge every month for headroom you never use.
Half-hourly data available but unused
Larger Hull sites are on half-hourly metering, which makes a sharp comparison possible and is rarely used for one. A steady process load should price keenly; if it is on a standard rate, it is overpaying.
Comparing unit rates instead of the annual bill
Standing charges vary widely between suppliers. A low unit rate attached to a high daily charge is a common way to end up paying more over a year, and it is why we compare annual cost.
VAT and Climate Change Levy relief never claimed
Charities, care providers and very low users can qualify for 5 percent VAT and exemption from the Climate Change Levy, but only if a declaration is filed. It is claimed, not negotiated, and it is often missed.
Where does a Hull business electricity bill actually go?
A Hull business electricity bill is made up of six parts. Three of them move when you switch supplier; three are set by the network and the government and reach you whoever bills you.
| Part of the price | What sets it in Hull | Can you negotiate it? |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale energy | The market on the day you fix. Same across Great Britain. | Yes, through timing and contract type |
| Supplier margin | Each supplier’s own pricing for your credit profile, consumption and meter type. | Yes, this is where comparison works |
| Standing charge | Set by the supplier. Varies widely between quotes for the same meter. | Yes, compare it alongside the unit rate |
| Distribution (DUoS) | Northern Powergrid, Yorkshire region, MPAN prefix 23. | No, set regionally |
| Transmission (TNUoS) | Mostly a fixed charge banded by site size since 2022–23, with a small locational element. | No, set nationally |
| Climate Change Levy and VAT | Taxes at national rates. | Only through reliefs, such as 5% VAT for low use or charities, or a climate change agreement |
Who runs the electricity network in Hull?
Northern Powergrid runs the electricity network in Hull under its Yorkshire licence, and every Hull MPAN begins with 23. It owns and maintains the cables and substations, responds to faults and connects new supplies. It does not sell electricity and you cannot switch it.
The Yorkshire licence covers Hull, the East Riding, Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford, so a Hull meter shares its distribution charges with the rest of the county. The east of the city, around Saltend and the docks, has some of the strongest network capacity in the region because of the industry it was built for, which is one reason the area has attracted large new connections.
Confirm it from your bill. The first two digits of the bottom line of your MPAN are the distributor ID. For Hull that is 23. The network’s costs reach you as DUoS charges collected by your supplier; you never deal with Northern Powergrid directly unless there is a fault or a new connection.
How does switching business electricity supplier work in Hull?
Any business in Hull can switch electricity supplier, the switch is paperwork, it takes four to eight weeks and nothing at the site changes. Every licensed supplier can quote any GB meter, so your region doesn’t limit who will price you, only the network element they all pass through. We compare quotes from a range of licensed UK suppliers, and you can see who we work with on our suppliers page. Here’s how a comparison runs from start to finish.
We take the MPAN, meter type, contract end date and twelve months of consumption from a recent bill. If the current rate is out of contract or rolled over, we say so.
Your Hull meter is priced by our supplier panel on the same start date and term, so the quotes are directly comparable. Fixed, pass-through and flexible options where they apply.
Unit rate, standing charge and the annual cost side by side. The lowest unit rate is not always the lowest bill, and we’ll show you why.
We serve notice on the old contract, handle the transfer, and remind you well before the next termination window so you are not caught out by a rollover.
Which businesses in Hull do we work with?

If you run several sites, in Hull or across regions, multi-site business energy explains how we handle an estate as one portfolio, and what an energy broker does covers how we work.

Businesses we have helped
From member-owned clubs and parish councils to multi-site operators, our case studies show what a review found, what changed and what it saved, in the businesses’ own words. Read the case studies.

Should a Hull business take a fixed, pass-through or flexible electricity contract?
Most small and medium businesses in Hull choose a fixed price for one to three years, and larger half-hourly sites are the ones that should look at pass-through or flexible. A fixed contract buys certainty, at a premium, and you get no benefit if wholesale prices fall during the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy and lets the network charges float, which suits a site with steady load and a finance team that can handle a variable line. Flexible procurement buys energy in tranches and is normally for larger half-hourly sites or multi-site groups.
Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Larger businesses are usually asked for written notice somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. If you are a microbusiness, Ofgem caps the notice a supplier can require at 30 days, and many microbusiness fixed-term contracts need no notice at all. Miss it and you can be rolled onto out-of-contract rates, which is one of the most expensive things that can happen to a business electricity account, and one of the easiest to prevent.

Hull business electricity FAQs
How do I compare business electricity prices in Hull?
Send us a recent bill. We take the MPAN, meter type and consumption from it, price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel and show the results as an annual cost. You choose; we handle the switch.
Who is the electricity distributor for Hull?
Northern Powergrid, under its Yorkshire licence. Every Hull MPAN starts with 23. It runs the wires and is paid through your supplier; it does not sell electricity.
Is business electricity cheaper in Hull than in Leeds?
Both sit on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire area, so the distribution charges are set on the same basis and the wholesale part is national. Differences between quotes come from the meter, not the city.
Our Hull warehouse runs cold storage around the clock. How is that priced?
A steady 24-hour load is easier for a supplier to hedge than a daytime-only one, so on the right contract it prices keenly. Make sure the comparison uses your real half-hourly data rather than an estimated profile.
Can a business on the docks switch electricity supplier?
Yes. Any mains-connected meter can switch, including sites on private networks within the port estate, though those sometimes need the landlord’s arrangements checked first. We do that from the bill.
We are a fishing or food business in Hull. Do we qualify for any relief?
Possibly. Some food-processing operations fall under Climate Change Agreements that reduce the Levy, and very low users can qualify for 5 percent VAT. We check eligibility as part of a review.
What is the MPAN on a Hull electricity bill?
The Meter Point Administration Number, a 21-digit reference printed in a grid on every bill. The bottom line’s first two digits, 23 in Hull, identify the network. A supplier needs the full MPAN to quote.
Does Clearsight Energy cover Beverley, Goole and the rest of the East Riding?
Yes. The whole East Riding sits on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire area and we compare for any mains-connected business meter in it.
Does switching electricity supplier interrupt the supply in Hull?
No. The meter, the cables and Northern Powergrid all stay exactly as they are. The switch is a change of billing and a meter reading on the day; nobody visits and nothing changes at the site.
What is the difference between a fixed and a pass-through electricity contract?
A fixed contract locks the whole unit rate for the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy element but passes network and policy charges through at cost as they change, which is usually a little cheaper and a little less predictable. Flexible contracts, for larger sites, buy the energy in portions over time.
How far ahead of my contract end date should a Hull business get quotes?
Start four to six months out. That leaves time to serve notice inside the termination window, compare properly, and line the new contract up to start the day the old one ends so you never see out-of-contract rates.
Who supplies electricity to businesses in Hull?
There is no single supplier. Northern Powergrid runs the wires, and any licensed business electricity supplier can bill a Hull meter. We compare the suppliers on our panel for your MPAN and consumption and show the results side by side.
Why is my business electricity bill so high in Hull?
The usual reasons, in order of how often we see them: the contract has lapsed onto out-of-contract rates, the standing charge is high for the meter type, the supply capacity is bigger than the business needs, or VAT and Climate Change Levy relief has never been claimed. One bill is enough for us to tell you which.
What is the average business electricity price in Hull?
There is no published average worth relying on. Prices are built per meter from wholesale timing, consumption, meter type and credit profile, so two Hull businesses next door to each other can be quoted very differently. A live comparison for your MPAN is the only number that means anything.
How do I get quotes from multiple electricity suppliers in Hull?
Send us one recent bill. That gives us the MPAN, meter type, consumption and current rates, and we price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel so the figures are like for like.
How long does a business electricity switch take in Hull?
Four to eight weeks from a signed contract is typical, driven mostly by your current contract’s notice period and end date rather than anything physical. The transfer itself is a date and a meter reading.
