How do you compare business electricity prices in Swansea?
Start with a recent bill. Swansea sits on National Grid Electricity Distribution’s South Wales licence area, MPAN prefix 21, and the network charges inside your unit rate are set for that region whichever supplier you use. What a comparison changes is the wholesale timing, the supplier’s margin, the standing charge and the contract shape.
Clearsight Energy compares business electricity for Swansea and south west Wales across the suppliers on our panel, prices every quote to the MPAN on your bill, and handles the switch end to end.
- Network operator. National Grid Electricity Distribution (South Wales licence).
- MPAN prefix. 21.
- Switching time. Four to eight weeks from signed contract, with no interruption to supply.
- Contract types. Fixed, pass-through or flexible, depending on size and appetite for risk.
- What is negotiable. Wholesale timing, supplier margin, standing charge, contract length and whether network charges are fixed or passed through.
Swansea’s electricity demand runs from the very heavy to the very small. Manufacturing and logistics on the Enterprise Park at Llansamlet and along Fabian Way run steady industrial loads; the university’s Bay Campus and Morriston Hospital are round-the-clock estates; SA1 Waterfront and the city centre are offices, hospitality and retail; and out towards Gorseinon, Fforestfach and the Gower it is small businesses, holiday lets and food producers with modest, seasonal loads. The same unit rate means very different things to each of them.
This page covers how a Swansea business electricity bill is built, who runs the wires, where the money goes, and how to compare suppliers on an annual-cost basis rather than a headline unit rate. If you would rather skip the reading and get prices for your meter, start here.
Where do Swansea businesses most often overpay for electricity
Almost every overpaying Swansea bill we see comes down to one of five things, and none of them is the wholesale market.
A rolled-over contract nobody renewed
Miss the termination window and most suppliers move you onto out-of-contract rates that can run 50 percent or more above a negotiated price. Family firms on the industrial estates and seasonal businesses on the Gower are where we see it most.
Industrial loads on a standard tariff
A factory or warehouse on the Enterprise Park with a steady profile should price keenly, because the load is easy for a supplier to hedge. On a standard small-business rate it pays for flexibility it never uses.
Capacity inherited from heavier industry
Swansea has a lot of premises on sites that once drew far more power. If the agreed supply capacity is still set for that, you pay a capacity charge every month for headroom nobody uses.
Comparing unit rates instead of the annual bill
Standing charges vary widely between suppliers. A low unit rate attached to a high daily charge is a common way to end up paying more over a year, and it is why we compare annual cost.
VAT and Climate Change Levy relief never claimed
Charities, care providers, manufacturers under a Climate Change Agreement and very low users can qualify for reduced VAT or Levy, but only if a declaration is filed. It is claimed, not negotiated, and it is often missed.
Where does a Swansea business electricity bill actually go?
A Swansea business electricity bill is made up of six parts. Three of them move when you switch supplier; three are set by the network and the government and reach you whoever bills you.
| Part of the price | What sets it in Swansea | Can you negotiate it? |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale energy | The market on the day you fix. Same across Great Britain. | Yes, through timing and contract type |
| Supplier margin | Each supplier’s own pricing for your credit profile, consumption and meter type. | Yes, this is where comparison works |
| Standing charge | Set by the supplier. Varies widely between quotes for the same meter. | Yes, compare it alongside the unit rate |
| Distribution (DUoS) | National Grid Electricity Distribution, South Wales region, MPAN prefix 21. | No, set regionally |
| Transmission (TNUoS) | Mostly a fixed charge banded by site size since 2022–23, with a small locational element. | No, set nationally |
| Climate Change Levy and VAT | Taxes at national rates. | Only through reliefs, such as 5% VAT for low use or charities, or a climate change agreement |
Who runs the electricity network in Swansea?
National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the electricity network in Swansea under its South Wales licence, and every Swansea MPAN begins with 21. It owns and maintains the cables and substations, responds to faults and connects new supplies. It does not sell electricity and you cannot switch it.
The South Wales licence covers the whole of the south from Pembrokeshire to Monmouthshire, so a Swansea meter shares its distribution charges with Cardiff, Newport and Carmarthen. North Wales sits on SP Energy Networks instead, with different charges. The industrial legacy of the Swansea Bay area means network capacity is strong around the old works and estates, which has made the area attractive for new energy-intensive connections.
Confirm it from your bill. The first two digits of the bottom line of your MPAN are the distributor ID. For Swansea that is 21. The network’s costs reach you as DUoS charges collected by your supplier; you never deal with National Grid Electricity Distribution directly unless there is a fault or a new connection.
How does switching business electricity supplier work in Swansea?
Any business in Swansea can switch electricity supplier, the switch is paperwork, it takes four to eight weeks and nothing at the site changes. Every licensed supplier can quote any GB meter, so your region doesn’t limit who will price you, only the network element they all pass through. We compare quotes from a range of licensed UK suppliers, and you can see who we work with on our suppliers page. Here’s how a comparison runs from start to finish.
We take the MPAN, meter type, contract end date and twelve months of consumption from a recent bill. If the current rate is out of contract or rolled over, we say so.
Your Swansea meter is priced by our supplier panel on the same start date and term, so the quotes are directly comparable. Fixed, pass-through and flexible options where they apply.
Unit rate, standing charge and the annual cost side by side. The lowest unit rate is not always the lowest bill, and we’ll show you why.
We serve notice on the old contract, handle the transfer, and remind you well before the next termination window so you are not caught out by a rollover.

Businesses we have helped
From member-owned clubs and parish councils to multi-site operators, our case studies show what a review found, what changed and what it saved, in the businesses’ own words. Read the case studies.

Should a Swansea business take a fixed, pass-through or flexible electricity contract?
Most small and medium businesses in Swansea choose a fixed price for one to three years, and larger half-hourly sites are the ones that should look at pass-through or flexible. A fixed contract buys certainty, at a premium, and you get no benefit if wholesale prices fall during the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy and lets the network charges float, which suits a site with steady load and a finance team that can handle a variable line. Flexible procurement buys energy in tranches and is normally for larger half-hourly sites or multi-site groups.
Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Larger businesses are usually asked for written notice somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. If you are a microbusiness, Ofgem caps the notice a supplier can require at 30 days, and many microbusiness fixed-term contracts need no notice at all. Miss it and you can be rolled onto out-of-contract rates, which is one of the most expensive things that can happen to a business electricity account, and one of the easiest to prevent.

Swansea business electricity FAQs
How do I compare business electricity prices in Swansea?
Send us a recent bill. We take the MPAN, meter type and consumption from it, price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel and show the results as an annual cost. You choose; we handle the switch.
Who is the electricity distributor for Swansea?
National Grid Electricity Distribution, under its South Wales licence. Every Swansea MPAN starts with 21. It runs the wires and is paid through your supplier; it does not sell electricity.
Is business electricity priced the same in Swansea and Cardiff?
The network charges are, because both sit on the South Wales area, and the wholesale part is national. Differences between two quotes come from the meter: consumption, profile, meter type and credit.
Our Swansea factory runs a steady load across the day. Does that help?
Yes. A steady load is easier for a supplier to hedge than a short peak, so on the right contract it should price keenly. Make sure the comparison uses your real consumption profile rather than an assumed one.
Can a holiday let or small business on the Gower switch electricity supplier?
Yes, any mains-connected business meter can switch. Very low users may also qualify for 5 percent VAT, which we check from the bill.
Are Welsh businesses treated differently from English ones by suppliers?
No. The rules, suppliers and contract types are the same across Great Britain. The only Welsh difference is the network: South Wales and North Wales sit on different distribution companies with different charges.
What is the MPAN on a Swansea electricity bill?
The Meter Point Administration Number, a 21-digit reference printed in a grid on every bill. The bottom line’s first two digits, 21 in Swansea, identify the network. A supplier needs the full MPAN to quote.
Does Clearsight Energy cover Llanelli, Neath, Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire?
Yes. All of them sit on the South Wales network and we compare for any mains-connected business meter across the region.
Does switching electricity supplier interrupt the supply in Swansea?
No. The meter, the cables and National Grid Electricity Distribution all stay exactly as they are. The switch is a change of billing and a meter reading on the day; nobody visits and nothing changes at the site.
What is the difference between a fixed and a pass-through electricity contract?
A fixed contract locks the whole unit rate for the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy element but passes network and policy charges through at cost as they change, which is usually a little cheaper and a little less predictable. Flexible contracts, for larger sites, buy the energy in portions over time.
How far ahead of my contract end date should a Swansea business get quotes?
Start four to six months out. That leaves time to serve notice inside the termination window, compare properly, and line the new contract up to start the day the old one ends so you never see out-of-contract rates.
Who supplies electricity to businesses in Swansea?
There is no single supplier. National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the wires, and any licensed business electricity supplier can bill a Swansea meter. We compare the suppliers on our panel for your MPAN and consumption and show the results side by side.
Why is my business electricity bill so high in Swansea?
The usual reasons, in order of how often we see them: the contract has lapsed onto out-of-contract rates, the standing charge is high for the meter type, the supply capacity is bigger than the business needs, or VAT and Climate Change Levy relief has never been claimed. One bill is enough for us to tell you which.
What is the average business electricity price in Swansea?
There is no published average worth relying on. Prices are built per meter from wholesale timing, consumption, meter type and credit profile, so two Swansea businesses next door to each other can be quoted very differently. A live comparison for your MPAN is the only number that means anything.
How do I get quotes from multiple electricity suppliers in Swansea?
Send us one recent bill. That gives us the MPAN, meter type, consumption and current rates, and we price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel so the figures are like for like.
How long does a business electricity switch take in Swansea?
Four to eight weeks from a signed contract is typical, driven mostly by your current contract’s notice period and end date rather than anything physical. The transfer itself is a date and a meter reading.
