How do you compare business electricity prices in Derby?
Start with a recent bill. Derby sits on National Grid Electricity Distribution’s East Midlands licence area, MPAN prefix 11, and the network charges inside your unit rate are set for that region whichever supplier you use. What a comparison changes is the wholesale timing, the supplier’s margin, the standing charge and the contract shape.
Clearsight Energy compares business electricity for Derby and Derbyshire across the suppliers on our panel, prices every quote to the MPAN on your bill, and handles the switch end to end.
- Network operator. National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands licence).
- MPAN prefix. 11.
- Switching time. Four to eight weeks from signed contract, with no interruption to supply.
- Contract types. Fixed, pass-through or flexible, depending on size and appetite for risk.
- What is negotiable. Wholesale timing, supplier margin, standing charge, contract length and whether network charges are fixed or passed through.
Derby is an engineering city with an engineering supply chain, and that shapes its electricity bills. Precision manufacturers around Sinfin, Raynesway and Spondon run machine shops and test rigs with heavy, steady loads. Pride Park and Infinity Park are offices and newer industrial units with modern meters. The Cathedral Quarter and the city centre are hospitality and retail in older buildings. The supply chain firms in between, often fifty people in a unit on an estate, are the ones most likely to be overpaying without knowing it.
This page covers how a Derby business electricity bill is built, who runs the wires, where the money goes, and how to compare suppliers on an annual-cost basis rather than a headline unit rate. If you would rather skip the reading and get prices for your meter, start here.
Where do Derby businesses most often overpay for electricity
Almost every overpaying Derby bill we see comes down to one of five things, and none of them is the wholesale market.
A rolled-over contract nobody renewed
Miss the termination window and most suppliers move you onto out-of-contract rates that can run 50 percent or more above a negotiated price. Supply-chain engineering firms are where we see it most, because the person who signed the contract is busy running the shop floor.
Machine-shop loads on a standard tariff
A workshop running machines across two shifts has a steady profile that suppliers price keenly on the right contract. On a standard small-business rate it pays for flexibility it never uses.
Capacity set for a previous occupier
Units on the Derby estates often carry agreed supply capacity set for a bigger or heavier previous tenant. If your maximum demand is well under it, you pay a capacity charge every month for nothing.
Comparing unit rates instead of the annual bill
Standing charges vary widely between suppliers. A low unit rate attached to a high daily charge is a common way to end up paying more over a year, and it is why we compare annual cost.
VAT and Climate Change Levy relief never claimed
Manufacturers under a Climate Change Agreement, charities and very low users can qualify for reduced Levy or VAT, but only if a declaration is filed. It is claimed, not negotiated, and it is often missed.
Where does a Derby business electricity bill actually go?
A Derby business electricity bill is made up of six parts. Three of them move when you switch supplier; three are set by the network and the government and reach you whoever bills you.
| Part of the price | What sets it in Derby | Can you negotiate it? |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale energy | The market on the day you fix. Same across Great Britain. | Yes, through timing and contract type |
| Supplier margin | Each supplier’s own pricing for your credit profile, consumption and meter type. | Yes, this is where comparison works |
| Standing charge | Set by the supplier. Varies widely between quotes for the same meter. | Yes, compare it alongside the unit rate |
| Distribution (DUoS) | National Grid Electricity Distribution, East Midlands region, MPAN prefix 11. | No, set regionally |
| Transmission (TNUoS) | Mostly a fixed charge banded by site size since 2022–23, with a small locational element. | No, set nationally |
| Climate Change Levy and VAT | Taxes at national rates. | Only through reliefs, such as 5% VAT for low use or charities, or a climate change agreement |
Who runs the electricity network in Derby?
National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the electricity network in Derby under its East Midlands licence, and every Derby MPAN begins with 11. It owns and maintains the cables and substations, responds to faults and connects new supplies. It does not sell electricity and you cannot switch it.
The East Midlands licence covers Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Northampton, so a Derby meter shares its distribution charges with the rest of the region. Sites in the north of the county towards Chesterfield and Sheffield cross into Northern Powergrid’s area, where the charges differ; for a business with premises on both sides the network line will not match even on one supplier contract.
Confirm it from your bill. The first two digits of the bottom line of your MPAN are the distributor ID. For Derby that is 11. The network’s costs reach you as DUoS charges collected by your supplier; you never deal with National Grid Electricity Distribution directly unless there is a fault or a new connection.
How does switching business electricity supplier work in Derby?
Any business in Derby can switch electricity supplier, the switch is paperwork, it takes four to eight weeks and nothing at the site changes. Every licensed supplier can quote any GB meter, so your region doesn’t limit who will price you, only the network element they all pass through. We compare quotes from a range of licensed UK suppliers, and you can see who we work with on our suppliers page. Here’s how a comparison runs from start to finish.
We take the MPAN, meter type, contract end date and twelve months of consumption from a recent bill. If the current rate is out of contract or rolled over, we say so.
Your Derby meter is priced by our supplier panel on the same start date and term, so the quotes are directly comparable. Fixed, pass-through and flexible options where they apply.
Unit rate, standing charge and the annual cost side by side. The lowest unit rate is not always the lowest bill, and we’ll show you why.
We serve notice on the old contract, handle the transfer, and remind you well before the next termination window so you are not caught out by a rollover.
Which businesses in Derby do we work with?

If you run several sites, in Derby or across regions, multi-site business energy explains how we handle an estate as one portfolio, and what an energy broker does covers how we work.

Businesses we have helped
From member-owned clubs and parish councils to multi-site operators, our case studies show what a review found, what changed and what it saved, in the businesses’ own words. Read the case studies.
“No pressurised selling was involved, just clear and constructive advice.”
Clearsight Energy have provided a quick and efficient service to our Parish Council. We will look to using them in the future when our other utility contracts are up for renewal.
Should a Derby business take a fixed, pass-through or flexible electricity contract?
Most small and medium businesses in Derby choose a fixed price for one to three years, and larger half-hourly sites are the ones that should look at pass-through or flexible. A fixed contract buys certainty, at a premium, and you get no benefit if wholesale prices fall during the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy and lets the network charges float, which suits a site with steady load and a finance team that can handle a variable line. Flexible procurement buys energy in tranches and is normally for larger half-hourly sites or multi-site groups.
Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Larger businesses are usually asked for written notice somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. If you are a microbusiness, Ofgem caps the notice a supplier can require at 30 days, and many microbusiness fixed-term contracts need no notice at all. Miss it and you can be rolled onto out-of-contract rates, which is one of the most expensive things that can happen to a business electricity account, and one of the easiest to prevent.

Derby business electricity FAQs
How do I compare business electricity prices in Derby?
Send us a recent bill. We take the MPAN, meter type and consumption from it, price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel and show the results as an annual cost. You choose; we handle the switch.
Who is the electricity distributor for Derby?
National Grid Electricity Distribution, under its East Midlands licence. Every Derby MPAN starts with 11. It runs the wires and is paid through your supplier; it does not sell electricity.
Is business electricity priced the same in Derby and Nottingham?
The network charges are, because both sit on the East Midlands area, and the wholesale part is national. Differences between two quotes come from the meter: consumption, profile, meter type and credit.
Our Derby machine shop runs two shifts. Does that help the price?
Usually yes. A steady load across long hours is easier for a supplier to hedge than a short daytime peak, so on the right contract it should price keenly. Make sure the comparison uses your real consumption profile.
We supply the aerospace and rail sector. Can we get a longer fixed contract?
Yes. Three-year fixed terms are common and some suppliers offer longer, which can suit a business with long customer contracts. We show the price of certainty against shorter terms so you can judge whether it is worth paying.
What is a Climate Change Agreement and does it apply to a Derby manufacturer?
A sector agreement with government that reduces the Climate Change Levy in return for energy-efficiency targets. Several engineering and metal-finishing sectors have them. If your trade association runs one, the reduction is significant and we check eligibility as part of a review.
What is the MPAN on a Derby electricity bill?
The Meter Point Administration Number, a 21-digit reference printed in a grid on every bill. The bottom line’s first two digits, 11 in Derby, identify the network. A supplier needs the full MPAN to quote.
Does Clearsight Energy cover Chesterfield, Burton upon Trent and the rest of the Derby area?
Yes. Derbyshire sits almost entirely on the East Midlands network, and Burton upon Trent, just over the Staffordshire border, is on the same network with MPANs beginning 11. Parts of the far north of the county around Chesterfield are on Northern Powergrid. We compare for any mains-connected business meter in either.
Does switching electricity supplier interrupt the supply in Derby?
No. The meter, the cables and National Grid Electricity Distribution all stay exactly as they are. The switch is a change of billing and a meter reading on the day; nobody visits and nothing changes at the site.
What is the difference between a fixed and a pass-through electricity contract?
A fixed contract locks the whole unit rate for the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy element but passes network and policy charges through at cost as they change, which is usually a little cheaper and a little less predictable. Flexible contracts, for larger sites, buy the energy in portions over time.
How far ahead of my contract end date should a Derby business get quotes?
Start four to six months out. That leaves time to serve notice inside the termination window, compare properly, and line the new contract up to start the day the old one ends so you never see out-of-contract rates.
Who supplies electricity to businesses in Derby?
There is no single supplier. National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the wires, and any licensed business electricity supplier can bill a Derby meter. We compare the suppliers on our panel for your MPAN and consumption and show the results side by side.
Why is my business electricity bill so high in Derby?
The usual reasons, in order of how often we see them: the contract has lapsed onto out-of-contract rates, the standing charge is high for the meter type, the supply capacity is bigger than the business needs, or VAT and Climate Change Levy relief has never been claimed. One bill is enough for us to tell you which.
What is the average business electricity price in Derby?
There is no published average worth relying on. Prices are built per meter from wholesale timing, consumption, meter type and credit profile, so two Derby businesses next door to each other can be quoted very differently. A live comparison for your MPAN is the only number that means anything.
How do I get quotes from multiple electricity suppliers in Derby?
Send us one recent bill. That gives us the MPAN, meter type, consumption and current rates, and we price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel so the figures are like for like.
How long does a business electricity switch take in Derby?
Four to eight weeks from a signed contract is typical, driven mostly by your current contract’s notice period and end date rather than anything physical. The transfer itself is a date and a meter reading.
