How do you compare business electricity prices in Reading?

Start with a recent bill. Reading sits on Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks’ Southern licence area, MPAN prefix 20, and the network charges inside your unit rate are set for that region whichever supplier you use. What a comparison changes is the wholesale timing, the supplier’s margin, the standing charge and the contract shape, and those are worth comparing properly.

Clearsight Energy compares business electricity for Reading and the Thames Valley across the suppliers on our panel, prices every quote to the MPAN on your bill, and handles the switch end to end.

  • Network operator. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (Southern licence).
  • MPAN prefix. 20.
  • Switching time. Four to eight weeks from signed contract, with no interruption to supply.
  • Contract types. Fixed, pass-through or flexible, depending on size and appetite for risk.
  • What is negotiable. Wholesale timing, supplier margin, standing charge, contract length and whether network charges are fixed or passed through.

Reading has one of the highest concentrations of corporate offices outside London, strung along the M4 at Thames Valley Park, Green Park and Winnersh Triangle, and most of them buy electricity in a way that was decided by a facilities contract years ago. In the town centre around the Oracle and Broad Street the picture is retail and hospitality in older buildings; out at Theale and Woodley it is distribution and light industry. Three very different load shapes, usually quoted as if they were the same.

This page covers how a Reading business electricity bill is built, who runs the wires, where the money goes, and how to compare suppliers on an annual-cost basis rather than a headline unit rate. If you would rather skip the reading and get prices for your meter, start here.

Where do Reading businesses most often overpay for electricity

Almost every overpaying Reading bill we see comes down to one of five things, and none of them is the wholesale market.

A contract that quietly renewed

Miss the termination window and most suppliers move you onto out-of-contract or deemed rates that can run 50 percent or more above a negotiated price. Business parks full of serviced offices are where we see it most, because nobody is quite sure who owns the energy contract.

Capacity booked for a bigger tenant

Units on Green Park and Thames Valley Park often carry an agreed supply capacity set for a previous occupier. If your maximum demand is well under it, you are paying a capacity charge every month for headroom you never use.

Half-hourly meters nobody looks at

Larger Reading offices are on half-hourly metering, which makes the data for a sharp comparison available and almost never used. Suppliers price a flat, predictable profile keenly; if yours is flat and you are on a standard rate, you are leaving money on the table.

Comparing unit rates instead of the annual bill

Standing charges and capacity charges vary widely between suppliers. A low unit rate attached to a high daily charge is a common way to end up paying more over a year, and it is why we compare annual cost.

VAT and Climate Change Levy relief never claimed

Charities, care providers and very low users in Reading can qualify for 5 percent VAT and exemption from the Climate Change Levy, but only if a declaration is filed. It is claimed, not negotiated, and it is often missed.

Where does a Reading business electricity bill actually go?

A Reading business electricity bill is made up of six parts. Three of them move when you switch supplier; three are set by the network and the government and reach you whoever bills you.

Part of the priceWhat sets it in ReadingCan you negotiate it?
Wholesale energyThe market on the day you fix. Same across Great Britain.Yes, through timing and contract type
Supplier marginEach supplier’s own pricing for your credit profile, consumption and meter type.Yes, this is where comparison works
Standing chargeSet by the supplier. Varies widely between quotes for the same meter.Yes, compare it alongside the unit rate
Distribution (DUoS)Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, Southern region, MPAN prefix 20.No, set regionally
Transmission (TNUoS)Mostly a fixed charge banded by site size since 2022–23, with a small locational element. No, set nationally
Climate Change Levy and VATTaxes at national rates.Only through reliefs, such as 5% VAT for low use or charities, or a climate change agreement

Who runs the electricity network in Reading?

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks runs the electricity network in Reading under its Southern licence, and every Reading MPAN begins with 20. SSEN owns and maintains the cables and substations, responds to faults and connects new supplies. It does not sell electricity and you cannot switch it.

The Southern licence area runs from Dorset through Hampshire and Berkshire into Oxfordshire, so a Reading meter shares its network charges with Southampton and Oxford but not with London, which sits on UK Power Networks. The distribution charge is one of the larger non-negotiable lines on a Thames Valley bill, which is exactly why the negotiable lines deserve attention.

Confirm it from your bill. The first two digits of the bottom line of your MPAN are the distributor ID. For Reading that is 20. The network’s costs reach you as DUoS charges collected by your supplier; you never deal with SSEN directly unless there is a fault or a new connection.

How does switching business electricity supplier work in Reading?

Any business in Reading can switch electricity supplier, the switch is paperwork, it takes four to eight weeks and nothing at the site changes. Every licensed supplier can quote any GB meter, so your region doesn’t limit who will price you, only the network element they all pass through. We compare quotes from a range of licensed UK suppliers, and you can see who we work with on our suppliers page. Here’s how a comparison runs from start to finish.

1
Bill review and MPAN check

We take the MPAN, meter type, contract end date and twelve months of consumption from a recent bill. If the current rate is out of contract or rolled over, we say so.

2
Price across the panel

Your Reading meter is priced by our supplier panel on the same start date and term, so the quotes are directly comparable. Fixed, pass-through and flexible options where they apply.

3
Compare the annual total

Unit rate, standing charge and the annual cost side by side. The lowest unit rate is not always the lowest bill, and we’ll show you why.

4
Switch and renewal reminder

We serve notice on the old contract, handle the transfer, and remind you well before the next termination window so you are not caught out by a rollover.

Which businesses in Reading do we work with?

If you run several sites, in Reading or across regions, multi-site business energy explains how we handle an estate as one portfolio, and what an energy broker does covers how we work.

Should a Reading business take a fixed, pass-through or flexible electricity contract?

Most small and medium businesses in Reading choose a fixed price for one to three years, and larger half-hourly sites are the ones that should look at pass-through or flexible. A fixed contract buys certainty, at a premium, and you get no benefit if wholesale prices fall during the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy and lets the network charges float, which suits a site with steady load and a finance team that can handle a variable line. Flexible procurement buys energy in tranches and is normally for larger half-hourly sites or multi-site groups.

Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Larger businesses are usually asked for written notice somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. If you are a microbusiness, Ofgem caps the notice a supplier can require at 30 days, and many microbusiness fixed-term contracts need no notice at all. Miss it and you can be rolled onto out-of-contract rates, which is one of the most expensive things that can happen to a business electricity account, and one of the easiest to prevent.

Reading business electricity FAQs

How do I compare business electricity prices in Reading?

Send us a recent bill. We take the MPAN, meter type and consumption from it, price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel and show the results as an annual cost, with standing and capacity charges included. You choose; we handle the switch.

Who is the electricity distributor for Reading?

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, under its Southern licence. Every Reading MPAN starts with 20. SSEN runs the wires and is paid through your supplier; it does not sell electricity.

Is business electricity more expensive in Reading than in London?

The wholesale part is the same. The network part differs because Reading is on SSEN’s Southern area and London is on UK Power Networks, and the two sets of distribution charges are not identical. The bigger differences between any two quotes come from the meter, not the postcode.

We are in a serviced office on Green Park. Can we switch electricity supplier?

Only if you hold the supply contract. In many serviced buildings the landlord or operator holds it and recharges tenants, in which case the comparison is theirs to run. If your name is on the bill, you can switch.

Our Reading office has a half-hourly meter. Does that change how we compare?

It helps. Half-hourly data lets suppliers price your actual profile rather than an assumed one, and a flat office load usually prices well. Make sure the comparison uses your real data rather than an estimate.

Can a Reading business be on different suppliers for electricity and gas?

Yes, and often it is cheaper to be. Dual-fuel discounts are rarely significant in the business market. We compare each fuel on its own merits and only recommend combining them when the numbers say so.

What is a capacity charge and why is ours high?

Larger meters carry an agreed supply capacity in kVA, charged monthly whether you use it or not. If it was set for a previous tenant or an earlier fit-out, it may be far above your actual maximum demand. Reducing it is a request to the network via your supplier, and we can check whether it is worth making.

Does Clearsight Energy cover the rest of Berkshire?

Yes. Wokingham, Bracknell, Newbury, Maidenhead and Slough are all covered, all on the same SSEN Southern network, so the network charges are set regionally rather than town by town.

Does switching electricity supplier interrupt the supply in Reading?

No. The meter, the cables and SSEN all stay exactly as they are. The switch is a change of billing and a meter reading on the day; nobody visits and nothing changes at the site.

What is the difference between a fixed and a pass-through electricity contract?

A fixed contract locks the whole unit rate for the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy element but passes network and policy charges through at cost as they change, which is usually a little cheaper and a little less predictable. Flexible contracts, for larger sites, buy the energy in portions over time.

How far ahead of my contract end date should a Reading business get quotes?

Start four to six months out. That leaves time to serve notice inside the termination window, compare properly, and line the new contract up to start the day the old one ends so you never see out-of-contract rates.

Who supplies electricity to businesses in Reading?

There is no single supplier. SSEN runs the wires, and any licensed business electricity supplier can bill a Reading meter. We compare the suppliers on our panel for your MPAN and consumption and show the results side by side.

Why is my business electricity bill so high in Reading?

The usual reasons, in order of how often we see them: the contract has lapsed onto out-of-contract rates, the standing charge is high for the meter type, the supply capacity is bigger than the business needs, or VAT and Climate Change Levy relief has never been claimed. One bill is enough for us to tell you which.

What is the average business electricity price in Reading?

There is no published average worth relying on. Prices are built per meter from wholesale timing, consumption, meter type and credit profile, so two Reading businesses next door to each other can be quoted very differently. A live comparison for your MPAN is the only number that means anything.

How do I get quotes from multiple electricity suppliers in Reading?

Send us one recent bill. That gives us the MPAN, meter type, consumption and current rates, and we price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel so the figures are like for like.

How long does a business electricity switch take in Reading?

Four to eight weeks from a signed contract is typical, driven mostly by your current contract’s notice period and end date rather than anything physical. The transfer itself is a date and a meter reading.
