How do you compare business electricity prices in Norwich?

Start with a recent bill. Norwich sits on UK Power Networks’ Eastern licence area, MPAN prefix 10, and the network charges inside your unit rate are set for that region whichever supplier you use. What a comparison changes is the wholesale timing, the supplier’s margin, the standing charge and the contract shape.

Clearsight Energy compares business electricity for Norwich and Norfolk across the suppliers on our panel, prices every quote to the MPAN on your bill, and handles the switch end to end.

  • Network operator. UK Power Networks (Eastern licence).
  • MPAN prefix. 10.
  • Switching time. Four to eight weeks from signed contract, with no interruption to supply.
  • Contract types. Fixed, pass-through or flexible, depending on size and appetite for risk.
  • What is negotiable. Wholesale timing, supplier margin, standing charge, contract length and whether network charges are fixed or passed through.

Norwich is a city of medium-sized loads: insurance and financial offices in the centre, food manufacturing around the ring road and out towards the Broads, research buildings at Norwich Research Park, and a dense independent retail and hospitality trade in the Lanes and around the market. Few of them are big enough for a bespoke energy team and most of them are big enough to be overpaying meaningfully.

This page covers how a Norwich business electricity bill is built, who runs the wires, where the money goes, and how to compare suppliers on an annual-cost basis rather than a headline unit rate. If you would rather skip the reading and get prices for your meter, start here.

Where do Norwich businesses most often overpay for electricity

Almost every overpaying Norwich bill we see comes down to one of five things, and none of them is the wholesale market.

A rolled-over contract nobody renewed

Miss the termination window and most suppliers move you onto out-of-contract rates that can run 50 percent or more above a negotiated price. Family businesses and small manufacturers around Norwich are where we see it most, because the renewal letter arrived in the busiest month of the year.

Refrigeration and process loads on a standard tariff

Food producers and cold-storage operators around Norwich run heavy, round-the-clock loads that suppliers price keenly on the right contract. On a standard small-business rate they pay far more than they need to.

Older city-centre buildings with the wrong meter

Shops and restaurants in medieval and Georgian premises around the Lanes often inherit meters and supply capacity from previous uses. A meter class mismatch shows up as a standing charge that is too high for the business inside.

Comparing unit rates instead of the annual bill

Standing charges vary widely between suppliers. A low unit rate attached to a high daily charge is a common way to end up paying more over a year, and it is why we compare annual cost.

VAT and Climate Change Levy relief never claimed

Charities, care providers and very low users can qualify for 5 percent VAT and exemption from the Climate Change Levy, but only if a declaration is filed. Norfolk has a lot of both, and it is often missed.

Where does a Norwich business electricity bill actually go?

A Norwich business electricity bill is made up of six parts. Three of them move when you switch supplier; three are set by the network and the government and reach you whoever bills you.

Part of the priceWhat sets it in NorwichCan you negotiate it?
Wholesale energyThe market on the day you fix. Same across Great Britain.Yes, through timing and contract type
Supplier marginEach supplier’s own pricing for your credit profile, consumption and meter type.Yes, this is where comparison works
Standing chargeSet by the supplier. Varies widely between quotes for the same meter.Yes, compare it alongside the unit rate
Distribution (DUoS)UK Power Networks, Eastern region, MPAN prefix 10.No, set regionally
Transmission (TNUoS)Mostly a fixed charge banded by site size since 2022–23, with a small locational element. No, set nationally
Climate Change Levy and VATTaxes at national rates.Only through reliefs, such as 5% VAT for low use or charities, or a climate change agreement

Who runs the electricity network in Norwich?

UK Power Networks runs the electricity network in Norwich under its Eastern licence, and every Norwich MPAN begins with 10. It owns and maintains the cables and substations, responds to faults and connects new supplies. It does not sell electricity and you cannot switch it.

The Eastern licence covers Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and much of Essex and Hertfordshire, so a Norwich meter shares its network charges with Cambridge and Ipswich. Rural parts of the county have long, exposed networks, and connection capacity can be a genuine constraint for growing food and agricultural businesses; that is a network conversation, separate from the supplier one.

Confirm it from your bill. The first two digits of the bottom line of your MPAN are the distributor ID. For Norwich that is 10. The network’s costs reach you as DUoS charges collected by your supplier; you never deal with UK Power Networks directly unless there is a fault or a new connection.

How does switching business electricity supplier work in Norwich?

Any business in Norwich can switch electricity supplier, the switch is paperwork, it takes four to eight weeks and nothing at the site changes. Every licensed supplier can quote any GB meter, so your region doesn’t limit who will price you, only the network element they all pass through. We compare quotes from a range of licensed UK suppliers, and you can see who we work with on our suppliers page. Here’s how a comparison runs from start to finish.

1
Bill review and MPAN check

We take the MPAN, meter type, contract end date and twelve months of consumption from a recent bill. If the current rate is out of contract or rolled over, we say so.

2
Price across the panel

Your Norwich meter is priced by our supplier panel on the same start date and term, so the quotes are directly comparable. Fixed, pass-through and flexible options where they apply.

3
Compare the annual total

Unit rate, standing charge and the annual cost side by side. The lowest unit rate is not always the lowest bill, and we’ll show you why.

4
Switch and renewal reminder

We serve notice on the old contract, handle the transfer, and remind you well before the next termination window so you are not caught out by a rollover.

Should a Norwich business take a fixed, pass-through or flexible electricity contract?

Most small and medium businesses in Norwich choose a fixed price for one to three years, and larger half-hourly sites are the ones that should look at pass-through or flexible. A fixed contract buys certainty, at a premium, and you get no benefit if wholesale prices fall during the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy and lets the network charges float, which suits a site with steady load and a finance team that can handle a variable line. Flexible procurement buys energy in tranches and is normally for larger half-hourly sites or multi-site groups.

Whatever you sign, write down the termination window. Larger businesses are usually asked for written notice somewhere between 30 and 180 days before the end date. If you are a microbusiness, Ofgem caps the notice a supplier can require at 30 days, and many microbusiness fixed-term contracts need no notice at all. Miss it and you can be rolled onto out-of-contract rates, which is one of the most expensive things that can happen to a business electricity account, and one of the easiest to prevent.

Norwich business electricity FAQs

How do I compare business electricity prices in Norwich?

Send us a recent bill. We take the MPAN, meter type and consumption from it, price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel and show the results as an annual cost. You choose; we handle the switch.

Who is the electricity distributor for Norwich?

UK Power Networks, under its Eastern licence. Every Norwich MPAN starts with 10. It runs the wires and is paid through your supplier; it does not sell electricity.

Is business electricity more expensive in Norwich than in Cambridge?

Both sit on the same Eastern network, so the distribution charges are set on the same basis. The differences between two quotes come from the meter: consumption, profile, meter type and credit, not the city.

Our Norwich food business runs fridges and freezers all night. Does that help or hurt the price?

It usually helps, provided the contract reflects it. A steady 24-hour load is easier for a supplier to hedge than a daytime-only one, so the right contract should price it keenly. Make sure the comparison uses your real consumption profile.

Can a farm or rural business near Norwich switch electricity supplier?

Yes, any mains-connected meter can switch. Rural sites sometimes have older or unmetered-style arrangements that need tidying up first; we check that from the bill.

We have shops in Norwich and other Norfolk towns. One contract or several?

Usually one. A multi-site contract brings every MPAN under one supplier, one end date and one set of terms, and tends to price better than a handful of small individual contracts.

What is the MPAN on a Norwich electricity bill?

The Meter Point Administration Number, a 21-digit reference printed in a grid on every bill. The bottom line’s first two digits, 10 in Norwich, identify the network. A supplier needs the full MPAN to quote.

Does Clearsight Energy cover Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn and the rest of Norfolk?

Yes. The whole county sits on UK Power Networks’ Eastern area and we compare for any mains-connected business meter in it.

Does switching electricity supplier interrupt the supply in Norwich?

No. The meter, the cables and UK Power Networks all stay exactly as they are. The switch is a change of billing and a meter reading on the day; nobody visits and nothing changes at the site.

What is the difference between a fixed and a pass-through electricity contract?

A fixed contract locks the whole unit rate for the term. A pass-through contract fixes the energy element but passes network and policy charges through at cost as they change, which is usually a little cheaper and a little less predictable. Flexible contracts, for larger sites, buy the energy in portions over time.

How far ahead of my contract end date should a Norwich business get quotes?

Start four to six months out. That leaves time to serve notice inside the termination window, compare properly, and line the new contract up to start the day the old one ends so you never see out-of-contract rates.

Who supplies electricity to businesses in Norwich?

There is no single supplier. UK Power Networks runs the wires, and any licensed business electricity supplier can bill a Norwich meter. We compare the suppliers on our panel for your MPAN and consumption and show the results side by side.

Why is my business electricity bill so high in Norwich?

The usual reasons, in order of how often we see them: the contract has lapsed onto out-of-contract rates, the standing charge is high for the meter type, the supply capacity is bigger than the business needs, or VAT and Climate Change Levy relief has never been claimed. One bill is enough for us to tell you which.

What is the average business electricity price in Norwich?

There is no published average worth relying on. Prices are built per meter from wholesale timing, consumption, meter type and credit profile, so two Norwich businesses next door to each other can be quoted very differently. A live comparison for your MPAN is the only number that means anything.

How do I get quotes from multiple electricity suppliers in Norwich?

Send us one recent bill. That gives us the MPAN, meter type, consumption and current rates, and we price the same usage across the suppliers on our panel so the figures are like for like.

How long does a business electricity switch take in Norwich?

Four to eight weeks from a signed contract is typical, driven mostly by your current contract’s notice period and end date rather than anything physical. The transfer itself is a date and a meter reading.
